BAOBABCONNECTIONS PRESENTS: BARAZA PHOTO COMPETITION |
Baraza is a Swahili word which refers to the sitting area in front of a traditional Swahili house. On the African east coast, the baraza is the spot where youth hang out when they are not busy with school or work. It's the place where daily events are discussed, where visions of the world are shared and friendships are built. Of course every culture has its barazas.

To explore the concept of the baraza, Baobabconnections organizes a photo competition which revolves around the places in the city where young people come together. In Swahili culture, the baraza itself often is simply a concrete bench. But it's the people that bring it to life and make it into a colorful, lively setting which is well worth being captured in a photo!
In this competition, we are asking you to send in your favorite photo showing your local equivalent of the baraza. Go out with your camera, capture the settings and/or its people and upload the pic here in the competition section.
Prizes
By joining the Baraza competition you have three chances to win a prize:
1. the best photo taken by non-professional material (phone or simple camera) wins a 7 megapixel GE digital camera (A730) and a mentorship by Naomi Williams.
