There’s something about Sara
Interview by Pepe Haze
Sara Mitaru is an Afro Fusion Artist based in Kenya. We chat to her about her music and work as an activist.
Sara Mitaru. The loud vibrant singer is famously known for giving unforgettable live performances and she did not disappoint when she performed her new single "Mama" at the opening ceremony of the Your City International Youth Crime Prevention and Cities Summit in Durban. Sara is as well known for always quoting Martin Luther King's statement; "If you do not dream, you will not dare, and if you do not dare, you will not realize what you have dreamed". She is a firm believer and women activist, an idealist in her own words and hopes to give the world a different outlook on women in Africa.
Q: Why did you choose music as a career?
A: Because it is my love and passion.
Q: What do you have to say to children's parents who still look down upon music today and don't see it as a wise career move?
A: I hold with me a Bachelor of Commerce but I chose to be a musician because it is the most powerful job available in today's world. With it, I can say anything to everyone.
Q: What message do you have for aspiring young musicians?
A: Work hard! Study, prove yourselves, educate yourself. Then pursue music if it is truly your love and passion.
I say that because, most people choose music as a way out - as a last resort. It shouldn't be like that. Music is a hard route to follow and a lot of hard work is needed in the field. So children out there need to know that.
Q: What message do you often give in your music?
A: I address issues concerning women and children, for instance gender equality, children's rights and gender violence...
Q: What projects are you involved in?
A: I'm actively involved with women in leadership roles to ensure that young people and women are shown the respect they deserved. So far I've worked with Life skill Partners since January 2008. It is group that was setup to help internally displaced people in Kenya get their lives back. The project is still young but together we've been able to relocate and put 125 kids in school.
Q: Where do you see yourself five years from now?
A: Well... (she pauses for a moment) I see myself walking away with a Grammy (lol). Actually, I'm serious about that and also I would create a platform for emerging women artists. Finance them and help them as much as possible to reach a world standard. And last but not least I would like to work behind organizations that help kids and women.
Q: Let's say I happen to be really lazy and I didn't listen to a word you said in
this interview, as your last words what would you want me and the rest of the world to know?
A: I would like everyone to remember these few lines by Martin Luther King; "If you do not dream, you will not dare, and if you do not dare, you will not realize what you have dreamed".
During the Your City International Crime Prevention & Cities Summit, the Baobab team and the 20 winners of the competition are reporting live from the summit premises! Keep checking back for daily updates.
