Interview with judge Hennah Buyne
by Lebogang Tsoametsi
Women all over the world are fast making their mark in the world. We have strong women in leadership like Condoleeza Rice, the US secretary general of security, Ms Phumzile Mlambo Ngcuka, South Africa vice president, Hillary Clinton who is running for US office and many other women in business , politics, medicine, law and other sectors, who have and are still trying to make it happen for other women.
Amongst those extraodinary women making a difference in the world is judge Hennah Buyne from the Netherlands. I had the opportunity to chat to her about the role that young women play in fighting crime in her country. As much as it would be wonderful for all young women to turn out and be like the amazing women mentioned above, sadly the reality proves otherwise.
"We have young girls falling pregnant from the age at 12 and most run away from home as they are rejected from their own homes", explains the judge. However, there are women who dedicate their time to love and guide these lost souls back to the light. These women hold confidential sessions with these young girls and encourage them to go back to school and let them see that they still can have a future despite their current situation, these women give their time to connect with these girls.
Judge Hennah believes that strong rooted families give birth to strong individuals, especially girls who have proper values, who don’t go out in the streets to search for affection from people who want to hurt them. "Self esteem amongst youth is a huge issue, because I have seen young men and women come in out of my courtroom who think little of themselves, who have little or no respect for themselves, because no self respecting person would want to commit a crime", she said.
Everywhere you go, no matter how ill-shaped the community might be, if one has a good mentor or role model to look up to then that person will surely become someone valuable to the community. Judge Buyne also shares my sentiments and believes that mentorship should start at a very young age and carried on to next generations.
Judge Buyne believes in investing in young people, that way they feel valued and they don’t see the need to go commit any offense as they know someone cares for them and wouldn’t want to see them throw away their lives. "Giving young people your time and attention from older people, I believe every child deserves a brighter future and we can create safer cities if we came together and create safety, good health and help find build self esteem and confidence through art and culture", said Judge Buyne.
The significance of having this summit is a big one as it brings together diverse cultures, races, communities and it creates a platform for young people to positively compete with each other and in working together to create a better world to live in, I believe above all it promotes the values of young people.
